He is an Internet entrepreneur, journalist, blogger, and founder of Gawker Media. He also served as the managing editor at Gawker.com in New York until a lawsuit brought by Hulk Hogan ended his tenure. Denton managed Gawker Media from his SoHo apartment for many years after he founded it in 2003.
Gawker published a portion of a leaked tape containing sex from former professional wrestler Hulk Hogan on October 4, 2012. Hogan filed a lawsuit against Gawker for privacy violation after Denton refused to obey a cease and desist order from Hogan. The jury ruled in favor of Hogan on March 18, 2016 and awarded him $115million, $55 million in compensatory damages, and $60 million for emotional distress. Hogan was awarded $25 million more in punitive damages by the jury on March 21. Denton received $10 million personally. Denton applied for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in August 2016. Denton and Hogan reached a deal that allowed him to declare bankruptcy on March 22, 2017.
It was later revealed in May 2016 that he had paid $10 million in legal expenses to finance several lawsuits brought by others against Denton and Gawker Media, including a lawsuit by Hulk Hogan. Denton publicly blamed Thiel several times for having planned to take down Gawker.com.

The National Organization for Women called the article “slut-shaming” Terry O’Neill, president of NOW, stated that the piece is “public sexual harassment.” It targets O’Donnell and all women who consider entering the public sphere. Justin Elliott, Salon’s editor, criticized the article’s ad-hoc nature and tweeted “Today we are all Christine O’Donnell.” Gawker.com paid for the story in the “lower four figures,” according to reports.
